The 1449 amp-in-case was the first attempt to carry
the genius of Joe Fisher's all-in-one idea into the two pickup world. Why did
the 1449 vanish so quickly? Was it too similar to the 1448 in color and design?
Whatever the reason, this amp-in-case remains the rarest of that breed. The
better amp/two p/u guitar team would become the 1457, the guitar would get a redburst paint job
upgrade and a slightly different pickguard, and the 1449 had vanished from Sears
catalogs and shelves by early 1964.
Introduced:
Spring/Summer 1963 at $99.95
as the 57K1449LK
Retired:
Fall/Winter 1963 at $99.95
as the 57G1449L

The first time I saw a 1449 guitar, I thought
someone had modded a 1448 to add a second pickup. Not until I looked closer at
the amp (just like the 1457) did I see that we had a completely separate
Masonite musical machine. Because of its higher initial price (almost a hundred
bucks!) and short window of availability, the 1449 is the rarest of the
semi-solid amp-in-case royal family.
